Helpful answers / Fraud Awareness
“Is this a scam?”
Something feels unusual. You are being asked to act quickly. It is reasonable to pause and check.
The short answer
Do not rely on a caller’s story or contact details to verify the caller. Pause the conversation and check the claim using contact information you find independently. Urgent demands for payment or personal information are reasons to slow down.
A calm way to check the claim.
- PauseDo not let a caller or message rush you into paying or sharing information.
- Verify independentlyUse the organization’s official website or a known contact—not a link or number supplied in the suspicious message.
- Ask for another perspectiveTalk with someone you trust. An outside perspective can help separate the claim from the pressure.
If you have already shared money or information.
The next step depends on what was shared and how payment was made. Contact the relevant bank, payment service, or company promptly. The FTC guide below provides steps by situation.
